Network Access

Guidance from MBIM IT for wired network access, Wi-Fi, and remote access to UBC resources for Microbiology and Immunology members.

Wired network (wall ports)

Microbiology and Immunology members may access the wired network through wall ports using a CAT 5E/6 network cable. Before receiving an IP address, most networks in the building require device registration. Please contact MBIM IT with the device details below and let us know whether the device is UBC-owned or BYOD (personal).

If the device is BYOD, it must meet all UBC Information Security Standards (ISS) as part of the BYOD policy.

Network registration requirements. Please include the details below when requesting wired network access for a device.

  • Ownership (personal or UBC)
  • Make
  • Model
  • Serial number
  • Hardware address (MAC address) — need help finding it? Visit Wikihow: Linux, Windows, macOS
  • Confirmation that the computer meets ISS and BYOD requirements

Wireless network (Wi-Fi)

UBC provides several wireless network options depending on your role and use case. On campus, MBIM IT recommends connecting to ubcsecure for an encrypted and secure connection.

  • UBCSECURE — available to all faculty, staff, and students with a valid CWL.
  • UBCPRIVATE — available to faculty and staff with a valid CWL. Username login format: CWLusername.micb.
  • UBCVISITOR — a public network intended for light web browsing by guests visiting UBC campus.
  • EDUROAM — roaming wireless access at participating institutions using your home-institution credentials. Example format: InstitutionalUsername@sfu.ca.

Remote access (VPN)

Remote access to UBC resources is available through myVPN (Cisco AnyConnect) for faculty, students, and staff. For help connecting to a workstation from outside department networks, review the Work Remotely guidance.

To install and configure the myVPN client, follow UBC IT’s setup documents.

myVPN requirements

  • Requires a Campus-Wide Login (CWL)
  • Supported devices: macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS
  • Eligibility: all UBC faculty, students, and staff
